Trent Akens
Name: Trent Akens
Boat Name: Jimmy K
Boat Length: 24 feet
Catch: Seabass
Method: Seabass are a piscivorous fish that hunt nocturnally for they’re prey. The fishermen use this piece of knowledge to target this fish specifically. Trent actually “jigs” for live squid as bait in the evening and fishes all night to catch seabass.
Location: Based out of Santa Barbara, Trent fishes all around the Channel Islands.
How did you get into fishing?
Trent started going out on boats with his uncle and grandfather when he was only five, and he says he just stuck with it!
What is your favorite part about fishing?
Trent’s favorite part of his job is the unique reward it gives him to feed a lot of people as his profession.
What are your hobbies outside of fishing?
Outside of fishing, Trent loves to surf. He’ll happily jump in the water wherever the swell is good.
Trent’s advice:
“It’s hard to find a job to do that you enjoy and can make a living at, but when you do, you’re going to work hard for something that you love to do.”
How do you cook what you catch?
As Trent reminds us, fish already taste pretty good on their own. His favorite way to prepare them is in a beer batter and fry them with a little cajun seasoning.
