How did you get into fishing?
Born in Santa Barbara to a commercial fisherman and daughter of a fishing family, it’s no wonder Fred became a fisherman. Growing up, “I worked around the boats and fell in love with it.” Upon his mother’s request, however, Fred also went to school to become the accomplished dentist he is today.

How have you connected with your community?
Fred says he’s always felt connected to the fishing community. He sees it as a good lifestyle and emphasizes the importance of promoting sustainability in fishing so that it may progress into the future.

What is your favorite part about your job as a fisherman?
Fred’s favorite part about being a fisherman is the game in it as well as the freedom it allows him. He loves having to make decisions and trust his judgement calls on deciding where to go, what lures to use, and all the necessary choices in navigating the chase.

What are your hobbies outside of fishing?
Outside of work, Fred has teenage kids that he loves to hang out with. His son fishes with him, and he enjoys surfing and diving in his free time.

Fred’s advice:
Concise and applicable to any field or lifestyle, Fred says to “think about what you see yourself doing in the future, and try to make that happen.”

How do you cook what you catch?
Fred loves cedar plank Salmon. He enjoys it cooked simply, with olive oil, salt and pepper, and a lime on top.
